- Tester vs boxed perfume: packaging and gifting considerationsShort answer: a tester is usually the same fragrance sold in plainer packaging, often a plain box and sometimes without a cap, which is why it tends to cost less. That is fine for yourself, but for a gift a retail-boxed bottle is the safer choice, and return terms for testers can be stricter.
